Kootenai River Outfitters Upland Bird

Bird hunting at KRO means having access to more than 500 acres of unique and varied habitat right out your door. From open fields filled with native grasses to dense forest cover we have it all.

We have also spent a considerable amount of time and effort on habitat reconstruction. More than 100 acres have been groomed and replanted specifically with our birds and wildlife in mind. Fields of clover, fescues, grains and other crops are maintained and intermixed with stands of larch, cedar, and pine to provide forage, cover and an exceptional hunting experience.

A very healthy population of Roughed Grouse inhabits the Ranch as well as a few Spruce and Blues. These are wild and wary birds and very challenging to hunt. If you are interested in a nice change of pace from fishing in the fall, a day spent pursuing these birds can be just the thing to a well rounded Montana experience.

We hunt pointing labs that have grown up on the Ranch and know it well. For those that would prefer to bring their own dogs, your trained and well behaved dog(s) are always welcome.

Guests staying here in the late fall are welcome to access the Ranch water and Bull Lake to hunt water fowl too. Though we are not licensed to guide waterfowl hunts, guests may enjoy a day of "non-guided" hunting on their own. Numerous Ducks and Geese either fly through or winter over on the lake. A crisp fall / winter day with the mountains as a backdrop offer a unique and memorable experience.

For those interested or looking for an exceptional pointing / hunting dog we would like to gratefully acknowledge the fine work of John Greer. Owner / Trainer of Tiger Mountain Labs in Ellensburg WA . His dogs are the finest around and a joy to work with. Their natural pointing ability along with a strong working desire is the best we have ever seen. The sight of an 8 week old pup holding a point on a wild bird is something to behold. And this drive and intensity only gets better with age. These dogs have proven themselves on water fowl too in some of the roughest conditions imaginable. Snow, ice and 10 degrees and they are ready to go. I wish I had as much motivation and drive! They are also fine companions to have in the home with a wonderful temperament, quite frankly a pleasure to own and share a house with. We highly recommend them.
